Sagan Takes Second World Title

Peter Sagan from Slovakia won his second world road race title today in Doha, Qatar. The defending champion held off Great Britain's Mark Cavendish and Belgium's Tom Boonen to win from a messy sprint finish. Sagan truly has had a magical year and has won pretty much at will this season and this late end of season world title will really be the icing on the cake for what has been his best season to date.

Mark Cavendish will be ruing a missed opportunity and will be undoubtedly upset at today's result. He went into the race as perhaps the outright favourite and would have possibly won had he not been caught up in a messy sprint. Today's result will in some ways echo his silver medal from Rio, but Cavendish should be pleased with his season as a whole. He has added to his Tour de France stage win tally and has also secured his first Olympic medal. These are good results and he should try to look at the positives from these as he looks ahead to next season.

Belgiums Tom Boonen has had a phenomenal career and this was his last world championships before he hangs up his wheels after next years Paris Roubaix. Today Boonen added a bronze medal to his palmarés and this was a great result for him, given who he was up against in the final dash for the line.

After a rather uninspiring week in Doha for most of the other categories at the UCI World Championships the elite mens race ended in a rather eventful race that was good to watch and netted a very deserving winner in Peter Sagan.
