New to Cycling?

Hello Riders!

With being new to the sport, I have been asked to write about my experiences so far in the hope that they may be able to offer a little support and guidance to any new riders who are in the same position. I’d like to use this blog as an opportunity to share my personal experiences as I go along my journey and I’d love to hear from any new riders who are also on theirs. In essence, this will be a diary of my ups and downs within cycling as well as some of the bits in between.

With a surge in recent times of people not only getting on a bicycle, but actually taking up road cycling, the importance of having the right support there to help you on your journey will ensure that you are flying along in no time! Especially as a female rider, one of my main concerns was being on my own in the beginning. Even now I still lack the confidence to go out riding by myself and it may prove beneficial to begin your riding with other like-minded people, who perhaps ride as part of a club or go out in groups. Being surrounded with other riders on a similar level will prove to be a fantastic way to really improve your confidence whilst learning the ropes, as well as opening up a whole new social life!

Personally, my last experience of riding a bike goes back to childhood, where riding round my back patio at home in circles was as far as it went - so when it came to getting on a road bike, I had a long way to go! The ideas of clipping my feet onto pedals and actually using gears was ones that both intrigued and terrified me in equal measures (I can assure you that once you get past the mental block, it’s not all that bad.

My first piece of advice to anyone starting out, is to make sure you have the right cycling kit. It really can make all the difference between having a comfortable ride or complete nightmare! Cycling clothing was again, something completely new to me and even now I’m still learning all the bits and pieces. Although in my opinion, the first and foremost item of kit should be Cycling Shorts or Bib Tights – with a good quality chamois for padding this can be one of the determining factors as to whether or not you can sit comfortably the next day!

There are so many different factors that play a crucial role in ensuring your comfort whilst riding and I hope to talk more about these in future posts. Starting out in cycling will be one of the most rewarding experiences once you get to grips with how to ride and your confidence grows, and I hope that you can follow me on my journey!

In future posts I’d like to talk more about my first rides on the road (and how I made it back in one piece!), what I have in my kit bag and also other aspects of my training such as fitness and nutrition that I hope may prove useful to your own journey in the sport.

If you have any questions, please feel free to leave a comment below.

Until next time…
